frequently asked questions

What is speech and language therapy?

Speech and language therapy supports children who have difficulties with speaking, understanding language, communicating, or interacting with others. This can include challenges with pronunciation, vocabulary, social communication, or fluency.

How do I know if my child needs support?

Every child develops at their own pace, but you may want to seek advice if your child:

  • Is difficult to understand for their age

  • Isn’t using as many words or sentences as expected

  • Struggles to understand instructions

  • Finds it hard to interact or play with others

  • Has a stammer or hesitates when speaking

If you’re unsure, it’s always okay to ask — early support can make a big difference.

What happens in an assessment?

An initial assessment is relaxed and child-friendly. I will:

  • Get to know your child through play and interaction

  • Observe their communication skills

  • Ask questions about their development and your concerns

Afterwards, I’ll explain my findings clearly and discuss whether therapy would be helpful.

What does therapy involve?

Therapy is tailored to your child’s individual needs and may include:

  • Play-based activities

  • Speech sound practice

  • Language-building exercises

  • Strategies to support communication at home

I’ll always involve you, so you feel confident supporting your child between sessions.

How many sessions will my child need?

This varies depending on your child’s needs. Some children benefit from a short block of sessions, while others may need longer-term support. We’ll review progress regularly and adjust the plan together.

Do I need a referral?

No, you can contact me directly — there’s no need for a GP or school referral.

Can I stay with my child during sessions?

Yes, absolutely. Parent involvement is encouraged, as it helps you understand strategies to use at home and supports your child’s progress.

Do you work with schools or nurseries?

Yes, I can liaise with your child’s school or nursery if needed, to ensure consistent support across all environments.

What ages do you work with?

I work with children of all ages, from toddlers through to school-aged children.
